Ettli Kaffee

There is almost nothing better than walking into a warm, welcoming cafe on a cold day and being greeted by the scent of freshly roasted coffee beans wafting through the air. Ettli Kaffee, located at a busy shopping square in the centre of Karlsuhe, is the perfect place to rest your feet after a bout of walking, or to install yourself for some people-watching as you indulge in a sweet treat and some hot coffee to warm yourself up.

The expansive glass frontage simply beckons you to walk in, and I'm ever so glad I did. The menu is not extensive, but it provides everything necessary to transition from your morning coffee and pastry, to some rather delicious looking wraps and sandwiches for lunch, with other daily treats like a brownie or blueberry muffin, ready for the latter part of the day. Simplicity combined with quality ingredients seem to be the key here, and judging by the amount of foot traffic it gets, is clearly a philosophy that works!

The décor itself is simple and charming, with rustic wooden shelving and bright walls making it a cheerful and cosy spot to sit and relax. There are only a handful of tables out front, but venture towards the back and you’ll find more seating, although not a whole lot, as most customers (like me) tend to order their coffee to go as they continue on their shopping expedition, or very likely because they have a toddler who won't stay still.

The shelves are stacked with all sorts of products to further delight the senses and tempt you to spend more money than you really should! From luscious-looking bags of speciality ground coffee, to rows of herbs and spices, coffee pots and mugs, and other household bits and pieces, they all feel like they've been handpicked to be on the display for a special reason, making it evident that a lot of thought and love has gone into this cafe.

I loved the attention to detail, the colors that blend together without being visually overwhelming, the little touches of carefully placed decor on every corner, and the feeling of restfulness you get when you walk in - when the place isn't packed with people of course.

The service was friendly and cheerful, which is not always a given in Karlsruhe.

And the coffee? Simply excellent, natürlich.
