Grand Hyatt, Kuala Lumpur

For my birthday a few weeks ago, my parents surprised me with the best birthday gift (yes, you can still be spoiled by your parents at 32 years of age) - a weekend at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, while they looked after the kids.

It was just what we needed after all the stress of the past months - time to be together away from the children, to have a good night's rest without waking up to settle the toddler or feed the baby, to simply laze around in bed all day if we wanted to, which we did.

Grand Hyatt is one of KL's latest offerings on the hotel scene, located just minutes away from the Convention Centre and a short walk from KLCC and the Golden Triangle. We knew we were in for an interesting experience the minute we stepped out into the Sky Lobby onto the 39th floor of the building, and were immediately confronted with floor to ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of the city.

The hotel is modern, polished, and oozes sophistication and elegance by the buckets. I was immediately impressed by the conscientious level of service, and the attention to detail such as bottles of mineral water made available for the taking at various spots throughout the hotel.

We stayed in a Club Room where further aspects of the hotel's attention to detail is evident, with almost every amenity you need on hand including a lovely walk-in wardrobe where your clothes and suitcases can be safely hung and stored out of the way. Should there be something you need that is not provided, a list of 'missing must-haves' including deodorant, makeup remover, hair spray, magazines, and nail polish remover among others, is provided and can be delivered at the touch of a button.

The Club Room also gave us access to the Club Lounge, where coffee, tea and snacks are available throughout the day, while drinks (alcohol included), food and canapés are served free of charge from 6pm - 8pm every evening, which is where we found ourselves whiling the night away while sipping on wine and enjoying live jazz music.

A Continental breakfast can also be taken in the Club Lounge for those wishing to enjoy a little privacy, but to have the full complement of breakfast menu, one should definitely head to the gorgeous THIRTY8 restaurant, not just for its excellent buffet selection but also for the jaw-dropping view.

Enough pastries to satisfy anyone's sweet tooth
We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast here, which is one of the better hotel breakfast buffet experience I've had in awhile. I loved the open-kitchen concept, and the fact that food is cooked fresh on the spot at certain stations. The selection was varied, interesting and all delicious, with continental offerings like your traditional eggs, sausages and pancakes to local varieties like Nasi Lemak, Roti Canai, as well as an array of dim sums and other Asian dishes like a Cantonese Congee, Nasi Goreng and Mee Mamak.

Overall, our experience at the Grand Hyatt was one of absolute pleasure - from wine and canapés at the Club Lounge, snuggling up in the soft, comfortable bed for a dreamless sleep to dining at THIRTY8 the next morning. It was exactly what we needed to restore some equilibrium into our days, and we left after a wonderful breakfast feeling relaxed, with happy smiles on our faces and full, satisfied bellies.
