Tokyo Bay, Takapuna

A wonderful addition to the Takapuna seascape, The Husband and I had an excellent lunch here one sunny afternoon and left utterly satisfied, satiated and impressed with the Japanese restaurant that is Tokyo Bay.

According to its website, Tokyo Bay is operated by an experienced team who have already established a great track record for successful eateries, which could explain what makes Tokyo Bay such a winning combination.

Directors of the business – Sarasa Shimura and Mark Smith – have been the driving forces behind Soto Japanese Restaurant in St Mary's Bay and Tokyo Club, a highly regarded small Izakaya style restaurant within the popular Ponsonby Central establishment in Ponsonby, and joining them is Head Chef Chikara Soto -  a licensed 'Fugu' blowfish chef and Consultant Chef Hideharu Shimura.



The location of the restaurant which overlooks Takapuna Beach is faultless. On a sunny day, one can relax on the terrace while looking out at the ocean and enjoying a glass (or two) of wine. The interior is modern classy, and I was absolutely mesmerized by the shoal of swimming 'mackerels' hanging from the ceiling, which really brought together the element of dining by the sea into the restaurant. The venue itself isn't very big, so bookings are certainly recommended here, especially for dinner.


The menu features an extensive collection of Japanese favorites with a modern twist. Seafood is predominant here, and rightly so. We ordered the Bento Lunch boxes - the Blue Water for me and The Boss Bento for The Husband - and absolutely loved everything that was brought out on smart wooden trays. The presentation of each ingredient was beautiful, and I appreciated the variety of different tastes and textures from each portion. All ingredients were very fresh, incredibly delicious and cooked to perfection. 




With its spectacular location and excellent food, it is hard not to rave about this place. I love that you can have a casual lunch here, or a beautiful intimate dinner on a date night. It certainly put a dance in our step as we strolled along Takapuna beach after our wonderful lunch. 

For what its worth, I've also heard wonderful things about the Duck Dumplings, Baked Eggplants and Karaage Chicken, which are all on my list to try the next time I visit.
