2013 Brown Brothers 18 Eighty Nine Tempranillo

John Francis Brown planted the first vines of Riesling, Muscat and Shiraz in 1885 and released the first vintage in 1889. Today Brown Brothers manages several vineyards throughout Victoria. This lovely, solid Tempranillo was borne out of Brown Brothers’ Kindergarten winery, a mini-winery where they focus on trials of new varieties and innovative winemaking techniques.

It has a very enticing, complex nose with a lot of spice and red fruit. The palate is confident with plenty of ripe fruits, savory, earthy overtones and balance tannins. There is a surprising softness here, with a slight hint of vanilla and a lasting finish.

Verdict: A great drinking red with solid tannins. This wine will go well with most red meat, a selection of cheeses, or just enjoy it by itself, like I did!
