JKids Indoor Playground

We've been racking our brains trying to figure out how to keep the kids happy and entertained here at their grandparents' home, without resorting to plonking them in front of the television for hours on end. It's been more challenging than we thought.

The boys have endless energy and they both love being outdoors, but it is simply too hot here for prolonged outdoor play until at least 6-7pm, which is essentially the time they start to wind down and get ready for bed.

The family culture here is very different. Most kids don't seem to have a regular bedtime and will stay out with their families for late dinners or outings, shopping and other entertainment till late at night. It is not uncommon to see a family with little children still shopping at IKEA at 10pm here. Perhaps for that reason, a lot of play areas or child-friendly places only open at 10am and go on till 10pm! A far cry from European play spaces that tend to open around 7-8am and close around 4-5pm.

Children here also don't spend as much time outdoors due to the heat and smog in the city, and consequently a lot of activities seem to happen in malls, which Malaysians admittedly do very well. Unfortunately the boys hate being confined to a stroller, and it is a nightmare chasing after them in a mall where they get under people's feet, too close to escalators, and basically run in all directions except the one which we want them to go.

Thankfully, the last time we were in the country, I discovered JKids Indoor Playground, located at Gamuda Mall in Shah Alam, a short distance away from where my parents live. There are several other similar playgrounds located in various malls throughout the Klang Valley, which you can view on the website.

This indoor playground has been a lifesaver for us. The boys are able to burn off their energy in a safe, clean and stimulating environment, resulting in a few hours of happiness for them and a few hours of calm and peace for us without them constantly bickering and whining from boredom and being stuck indoors.

The playground is fantastic as far as little kids are concerned. There is a trampoline, a huge ball pit, little canons to fire plastic balls from, slides, lots of safe climbing structures, a 'sand pit' with the sand made from a special kind of edible seed from China, a couple of carousels, and foam blocks, all in a contained environment with everything padded and no sharp corners or edges.

There is an entrance fee of RM30 per child with unlimited playtime, and accompanying adults go in for free. You have to wear socks, or purchase socks from the counter, which adds to the hygiene and cleanliness of the place. You can also hire the space to hold birthday parties or celebrations at a reasonable cost, and if we lived here, I'd definitely consider having parties here as the kids grow older.
